So who am I and what are these books for?
I retired from full time work as an Educational Psychologist a few years ago but continue to work as an independent psychologist on a case by case basis. I now write books and materials aimed at young adults and older children

Where did the idea come from?
In the 1990s I worked 1-2-1 with young children schools in Colne, Lancashire. The children I worked with had an EHC Plan (then called a Statement of SEN). A recurring difficulty in learn basic number skills. This was in the 1990s and the Local Authority funded my two hours contact working one-to-one work with each child. I naturally began to write my own learning materials. This website describes the number skills resource that I devised. I still work as an Ed Psych and know that there are still a lot of children who find it difficult to learn and feel comfortable doing maths and using number-related skills. These books might help. Check it out.

where to begin?
I would begin at the beginning - lesson one, entitled this is one. Some children are already far beyond such rudimentary skills. Olivia, got to lesson seven in our first session (see opposite). But it best not to rush. It is important to establish a good coaching relationship with the child, and the material, always striving for success using the prescribed precision-teaching, visual method of learning number. Olivia already knew how to write the numbers as words
What do people say?
It is early days and I have only received 12 items of positive feedback and no items of negative feedback
Kim, a UK parent of a child with FASD:
“We got to lesson 33 of This is Five and my daughter decided she didn’t need dots and told me the answer of each addition sum. She has never been able to add up to 5 without using her fingers or equipment before today and she is 7. I’m so glad we started with This is Five. I wish I could have captured her realisation that she did it visualising the patterns.
Kait, an EP in the UK:
“The books did indeed reach a child and have made the world of difference. The stripped back repetitive framework and emphasis on building the dot patterns appealed to his logical brain. The young man (Yr 2) is reported to have said: ‘Well why didn’t you tell me that before?’ I wouldn’t change anything about the books.”
Anne, an EP in Ireland, wrote:
Anne, an EP in Ireland, wrote: “A parent got back to me and said that the books have given her confidence about working with her child because she knows what to say and what the next steps are. Her child is gaining confidence by the day.”.
Teacher of an 8 year-old boy in Ireland who was very anxious about Maths wrote:
Teacher of an 8 year-old boy in Ireland who was very anxious about Maths wrote: “He found the first book very easy and worked quickly through it and is delighted with his progress. One boy overheard him telling his friend “Maths isn’t so bad, I think I’m getting it now!”
What does the last page of this book look like?

- how to do add and take away sums up to five using number symbols (0, 1, 2, 3, 4,5)
- how to see magnitude five in real life situations
- how to observe, talk about, demonstrate and succeed in using a variety of basic number skills up to five
